7-Ketodeoxycholic Acid is the main end product of primary bile cholic acid degradation by intestinal bacteria.
Bile acids (BAs) are naturally occurring steroid amphipathic compounds. They are derived from cholesterol oxidation in the liver. BAs are the prime regulators of the metabolism of lipids, lipid-soluble vitamins, and other similar molecules. BAs enhance their digestion and absorption in the gut, along with their following transport and excretion. Furthermore, these molecules improve cholestereol, glucose, and energy homeostasis. However, in some liver diseases, like intrahepatic cholestasis where the pathological mechanism is reduced bile flow, BAs are accumulated in high concentrations and exhibit serious toxic effects.
7-Ketohydroxy acid belongs to a grade of organic molecules, known as dihydroxy BAs and derivatives. They contain two carboxylic acid groups.
